January 30: Introduction to class. Discussed syllabus. Passed out syllabus, calendar, and passes. Hwk: get syllabus signed by parent and complete research test
January 31: Timed Writing
February 1: Took notes on SOAPSTone (see ppt). Read and text marked "Underage Drinking Epidemic" and then completed a SOAPSTone.
February 2: In groups of 4, you read "Writing on the Wall", text marked it, and completed a SOAPSTone.
February 3: Took notes on how to write an analysis paragraph. Looked at a sample, and then began the paragraph writing for "Writing on the Wall". hwk: find your own article and bring it to class on Tuesday.
February 6: Today you finished writing your paragraph from Friday. You received your work back from last week to put in your binder.
February 7: Today you used your own article to do the following: text mark, complete a SOAPSTone, and write a purpose analysis paragraph. Due at the end of the period.
February 8: Learn about how to answer questions, especially opinionated questions. Then read "panel" article.
February 9: Answered questions in group about "Panel" article.
1. What do you think the author's opinion is about the current policy toward women serving in combat?
2. What is discrimination? Is the ban on women in combat the last area of discrimination in the military?
3. Why does the author think it is important that the contemplated change comes "generations after racial barriers fell"?
4. Why do you think that historically countries have usually had men fighting? Were these good reasons? Do they currently apply?
5. What is the overall purpose of the article?
February 10: Read Twitter article. Text Mark it and answer questions.
February 14: Tell me about a time that you tried to persuade someone to do something. Were you successful? Explain.
Then, fill in the blanks of this statement: I am not _____, but I am _____. Then write a paragraph persuading me to believe what you are.
February 15: Read "Three Ways to Persuade". Then we watched persuasive appeals on teacher tube. Finally, we viewed Shamwow and found the elements of ethos, pathos, and logos in the article.
February 16: Create a skit where you try to convince someone to either let you borrow the car, go to a concert, get money for new clothes, or change a due date. Write a script and be read to perform.
February 17: Perform skits.
February 21: In a well-developed essay write on the following: It has been said, "not everything that is learned is contained in books." Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion which source is more important? Why?
February 22: We analyzed a Kraft cheese ad together. Then you got into groups and analyzed an ad.

February 28: Read "A Change of heart" and mark the right side with your reactions. Then highlight 7 words you don't know and come up with context clue definitions. hwk: Crossword puzzle
February 29: Divide the essay into sections. Show its structure. Label the sections ethos, pathos, or logos. Hwk: Outline the essay.
March 1: Check outline. Go to computer lab to find facts for your essay.
March 2: Complete the questions for word choice found in the rhetoric powerpoint.
March 5: Discussed the Letters to the Editor. Then constructed an outline for the paper you will be writing. Turned in packet.

March 16: Completed structure, epl and response questions for Tannen. Turned in Tannen packet. Hwk: Find 5 facts about Internment Camps.
March 19: Kingston quickwrite. Then answered 2 prediction questions for Kingston. COmpleted the give one get one. Homework: vocabulary.
March 20: Read Woman Warrior and text mark.
March 21: Complete the first reading and rereading questions for Kingston found in the powerpoint under ERWC tab.
March 22: 1. Infer what Kingston believes are important qualities to develop as one grows up. 2. Write one page explaining your persepectives in regards to Kingston's view. make sure to use at least 2 quotes, properly cited, within your response.
March 23: Complete the slide with the chart comparing Tannen and Kingston found in the Language powerpoint.
March 26: Complete the quick write and two language questions for Ehrlich. Read and text mark also.
March 27: Complete a thorough SOAPSTone on Ehrlich's article.
March 28: Highlight words that prove that Ehrlich is part of the cowboy community. Make a list of words traditionally used to describe cowboys. Make a list of words that are not traditionally used to describe them. What happens when you put the tow lists together to describe cowboys? Then, complete an epl on the article.
